Dorothy Dandridge
This lovely and talented women was an actress, singer and dancer - but living in the mid 20th century in America wasn't ideal for anyone with a dark skin. She did well of course but, sadly, she never quite achieved what she was more than capable of being, a true superstar.
Over the years I have created numerous pictures of her, often pondering the unfairness of life. The movie of her life story, starring Halle Berry, is a tribute to Dorothy and well worth viewing.
This is a pencil colour picture, about 11" x 13" on Strathmore tinted mixed media card.

Emer Kenny. This beautiful and talented young woman acts and scriptwrites. She has been seen on British TV in 'Eastenders' and she wrote some scripts for an Eastenders spin-off series. She played to appreciative audiences as 'Bunty Windermere' in 'Father Brown'.

'FLOWER CHILD' a (slightly) mixed media painting in watercolour and watercolour pencil. Children pose problems for the artist. The answer is to work from photographs, as one does with pets and animals and as this painting was. It isn't a slavish copy, nor a tracing. I created this using my proportional dividers on grey-tinted Strathmore card. If you want to know how the dividers are used , take a look on the 'video' tab.

Natalie's career was ended by her tragic and suspicious death but she left a great movie legacy behind her: 'Splendor in the grass', 'Rebel without a cause' - these alone would earn her the title of star. Note: did you know that 'Splendour in the grass' is a line from Wordsworth's 'Ode'?

Study in Sanguine
Another pencil painting using few colours, mainly sanguine (red). Approx. 12" x 9", painted with Derwent drawing pencils and, in terms of technique, based quite closely upon an interesting sketch found on the internet, artist unknown. The original might have been a pastel painting. The board used was Strathmore toned tan mixed media.
Clara Bow
Popularly referred to as 'the IT girl', Clara featured in the silent films of the early 2Oth century. This is a colour pencil painting on tinted multimedia card, approx. A4 in size.

Tori Holub: Perfection
This is a stylised portrait of a remarkable young woman singer whose recreations of popular songs from The Carpenters, Olivia Newton John and others are so close to perfection that few listeners can tell the difference between the original and the recreation. Simply put, her voice is very special and she surely must be facing a splendid career in song.
